The mission of the Shelter Island Historical Society is the research, preservation and teaching of local history. We interpret Shelter Island’s past through historical material and through its people; from the first inhabitants, settlers, and town fathers to those who have made it a caring and unique community through the years. We strive to preserve the Island’s heritage for future generations.
In our constitution and by-laws:
The purpose of the Society shall be the discovery, preservation and dissemination of knowledge about the history of Shelter Island. The Society’s major functions will be to collect and preserve such artifacts and written materials of all sorts as may serve to establish or illustrate the on-going record of its life, people, conditions, events and activities. To this end the Society shall maintain and operate an historic house and barn, and conduct such activities and meetings as may serve to maintain, stimulate and promote its purpose.
